How to configure an effective hot water system at house with a heat pump?

Every owner of an energy-efficient house with a heat pump is looking for an equally efficient hot water production system. The obvious choice is hot water tanks, but not every tank will work effectively with a heat pump. What should you pay attention to when selecting devices? In this article you will find tips from NOXA experts and learn how to configure an energy-saving hot water system.

Why does the type and efficiency of the hot water tank matter?

Hot water tanks accompany various types of central heating installations. They operate both in small single-family houses and in commercial facilities with a much larger volume. You should know that domestic hot water tanks different requirements are imposed on heat pumps. Why is choosing the right device important?

A hot water tank operating in a system with a heat pump that has been incorrectly selected may be a source of problems in the future:

• Reduces pump efficiency by increasing electricity consumption.
• It causes the compressor in the heat pump to cycle and, as a result, the life of the device is shortened.
• In the long term, it will be necessary to modernize the installation, which will result in additional costs.

We will share with you information that is worth considering when configuring your water heating system. At the end, you will also read about the hot water tank recommended by NOXA, which is perfect for homes with a heat pump.

Layer-loaded or coil-loaded tank?

Layer-loaded tanks use hot water flowing from the exchanger. Water is directed to the upper part of the tank and then distributed in several layers below - hence the name of the device. The undoubted benefit is a shorter waiting time for hot water. However, sandwich models are mainly used for gas boilers.
For houses heated with a heat pump, a much better option is DHW tanks with an integrated spiral coil. One or two coils located inside the tank have their own water circulation. How it's working?

  • The coil circuit is connected to the heat source (e.g. pump), and the external circuit is connected to the water supply system.
  • The coil circuit receives thermal energy from the heat pump.
  • Cold mains water flows into the tank and is heated by the coil.
  • After heating, the hot water is distributed throughout the building.

Coil area and DHW tank efficiency

The coil area is a key parameter when selecting hot water tanks for houses with a heat pump. When selecting a tank with an internal exchanger (coil), due to the small temperature difference, it should be borne in mind that there should be at least 0.25 m2 of coil for each kW of the heat pump's heating power.
When choosing a device, it is also worth paying attention to the appropriate capacity of the container and its orientation, which determines the space needed for installation. In single-family houses, tanks with a capacity of 200-300 liters are usually used. To meet the needs of commercial facilities, NOXA produces tanks with a capacity of 500 liters.

Volcano Plus - a new standard of hot water tanks for home and commercial applications from NOXA

At NOXA, our priority is to design and deliver devices to the market that are reliable, intuitive to use and energy efficient. NOXA Volcano Plus meets this description - a hot water tank created especially for buildings heated with a heat pump.
NOXA Volcano Plus series devices are made of Duplex 2205 steel, which guarantees durability and corrosion resistance. In turn, the built-in SUS 316 steel coil has a large heat exchange surface, and therefore the preparation of hot water is effective.
Each hot water tank in this series meets stringent safety and energy efficiency standards. Thanks to 4 available sizes (200, 250, 300 and 500 l), ergonomic dimensions and vertical orientation, the device is easy to install and then keep it clean.

Choose a modern hot water tank from NOXA

Choosing the right hot water tank seems to be a difficult task, but it is possible. Universal NOXA devices perfectly meet the requirements of houses with heat pumps. Volcano Plus tanks work perfectly with Noxa heat pumps with a capacity of up to 10 kW.
